The odd thing in England is that Christianity (or at least the Anglican church) is thoroughly entrenched in the structure of most older universities, and from the outside the environment looks almost ostentatiously religious. Here in Spain no one cares at all if you're a Catholic, a Baptist or whatever; and, although the majority is nominally Catholic, the practice is way much more relaxed than what I've seen in the UK or the States.
